Thursday 25th February 2010Two men died yesterday after triggering an avalanche in the Curved Ridge area of Glencoe's Buchaille Etive Mor. Initial reports suggest the men may have fallen as far as 1500 feet as a result of the slide. A third man in the party of three escaped uninjured.

In a separate incident on Ben Nevis, a man was flown by helicopter to hospital in Fort William, and subsequently to Glasgow, after sustaining serious injuries in a fall from an ice route in Coire Na Ciste. You can read more on both these accidents on the BBC website.
More severe weather and snowfall is expected to effect Scotland over the coming days, and all climbers and walkers heading into the hills are strongly advised to check the latest information on avalanche conditions before setting out on the excellent Sportscotland Avalanche Information website. It is worth remembering that the depth and complexity of the snowpack in many areas of the Scottish Highlands, as a result of the most severe winter for many years, is creating avalanche conditions normally associated with the Alps and Canada.
